YA Book Subscription Box Review

So it has been quite some time since our last post on here. And guys, I am super super sorry. Celine has been busy with starting Uni (!!) and well… I’ve been incredibly lazy and busy binge watching ALL THE SITCOMS. It’s a disease, I’m telling you. First it was Friends, then it was New Girl and now I am spending my school holidays hanging with Modern Family. SOMEONE SAVE ME I CAN’T STOP. I know for a fact that I’ll be bingeing How I Met Your Mother in no time. ANYWAY, all that is for another post.

Subscription boxes. They’re like the new cool thing that everyone has, everyone wants etc. these days. So naturally, I decided to take a peek around and see what they have for offer. Before I go any further, some of you might be wondering: what the heck is a subscription box? Well, as my good ole’ friend Wikipedia states:

A subscription box is a package of retail products sent directly to a customer on a reoccurring basis. Subscription boxes are a marketing strategy and a method of product distribution.

In other words, you pay money to some Subscription Box people, and in return they send you a mysterious box each month (or, whatever depending on your subscription) filled with all sorts of fun and awesome things. Turns out there’s this huge number of YA book subscription boxes circling the world and I didn’t even know about it. And, they’re pretty darn awesome. I was contemplating on buying one but the US basically rules all of us and most of them are situated there, meaning that THE SHIPPING IS HELLA EXPENSIVE TO SEND TO AUSTRALIA AND THE ECONOMY SUCKS RIGHT NOW ESPECIALLY FOR US AUSSIES so yeah no, that never ended up happening.

Fast forward to sometime early-mid this year and The YA Chronicles is born. They’re a Monthly YA Book Subscription Box that’s situated in Australia. AUSTRALIA. *kisses Earth* These peeps still ship their subscription boxes internationally but of course, shipping to Aussies is much less. YAY! Everyone is happy.

Unboxing Time!

This is what my subscription box looked like when it arrived in the mail. The box is really pretty and cute, and super easy to open. Also, the shipping was insanely fast – I saw on The YA Chronicle’s Twitter feed that they were sending the boxes off on the 17th of September, and I received my box on the 18th, which was just totally fabulous.

The YA Chronicles

What it looks like inside. LOOK AT ALL THE BLUE *heart eyes* The theme for September’s subscription box was THAT HERO NONSENSE and honestly, the girls did an amazing job.

The YA Chronicles 2

First item in the box: a HARDCOVER of The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness. In Australia, most of the books that get published here are paperbacks, and we have the rare few hardbacks, so I was actually expecting to find a paperback in my subscription box as opposed to this shiny hardback, which was a lovely surprise. The Rest of Us Just Live Here was published on the 27th of August. I am a HUGE fan of Patrick Ness as he is one of my favourite authors of all time, so I was more than ecstatic when I saw that this was the book they featured this month.

The YA Chronicles 3

Along with the book, there was also: a cute little The Rest of Us Just Live Here badge/pin.

The YA Chronicles 1

Next item: a cute little 4GB superhero USB. HOW ADORABLE IS THIS THING? I am so using this from now on.

The YA Chronicles 4 The YA Chronicles 5

And probably my most favourite item in the box: a pendant necklace provided by ElysianWorkshop, which is an online Etsy store. I have been wearing this necklace nonstop from the day I got it, and in case you can’t read what the quote is on the pendant, it reads: “We know what we are, but know not what we may be.” – William Shakespeare

The YA Chronicles 6

I also received some book swag along with the subsciption box. Below is the September The YA Chronicles bookmark (it’s different each month, I believe) plus a bookmark of Untouchable by S. A. Starcevic plus a few digital download of the book. Whoo!

The YA Chronicles 7

And here’s all the items together…

The YA Chronicles 8

And… the Review

Pricing (all prices are in $AUD, and are accurate as of 29/09/15)

So I’ve done the maths and this subscription box offers a really good deal. The box itself is $29.99 (if you choose the 1 month subscription) and to ship around Australia it costs $9.99. So all up, that’s rounded to $40, which may seem really pricey, but when you take apart the items in the box, you are really saving up. The hardcover, The Rest of Us Just Live Here is currently priced as $18.94 on The Book Depository. The pendant is $16.95 along with shipping, according to the Etsy store and the Superhero USB is $24.95 with shipping on Ebay (though I am not 100% this is the exact store that The YA Chronicles used). Add in a free digital download of a book – approx. $10 – and that is already around $71 which doesn’t even include the badge/pin and two bookmarks. In essence, you’re paying half the price of what you could have been.

Quality and Quantity

I am really impressed with the quality of all the products that this subscription box included. The USB and the pendant are things that I know I’ll be using and wearing all the time, and well, now I have yet another gorgeous hardcover to pretty up my shelves. I really like that they only ever send out books that have been released no more than one month before the box is sent out, which means there’s little chance that you already own the book. Other than the book, TYAC box always includes a TYAC bookmark and 2-5 other items, which I think is a really nice amount.

As aforementioned, the shipping within Australia is super speedy, and only took 1 day to get to me.

Do I recommend subscribing to The YA Chronicles?

Hell yes! I highly recommend this box to any lover of YA fiction – particularly those who love to hoard all the bookish items (like me). Personally, I think that book reviewers in particular might want to just rethink whether they’d be okay with the possibility of receiving a book they already own, as I now do own two copies of The Rest of Us Just Live Here – but hey! at least this one is a hardcover. I’m still wondering what to do with my ARC copy, though. Aside from that, The YA Chronicles is a really promising and impressive subscription box that I definitely wouldn’t mind subscribing to again in the future. It’s a lovely surprise in the mail each month, and is all sorts of fun.

If you’re interested, get in quick and subscribe for The YA Chronicle’s October Box which is closing soon! The theme is Time and Time Again and boxes start at $29.99 AUD. Shipping fees to Australia and New Zealand is $9.99 AUD and to other countries it is $24.99 AUD.

I received the September box from The YA Chronicles for free in exchange for review.

  1. Great review Mel! I love the idea of the box and it looked like it was put together lovingly, but yeah I pretty much don’t need repeat copies of books I might get. I think it’s perfect for Aussie YA lovers though!

Omg a YA book subscription box? I had no clue that these things even existed. I need one of these stat! It does seem really pricey, but good to know all the products you got in return made it worth it. Thanks for sharing with us, Mel!

  7. Glad you’re back 🙂 This definitely seems like an amazing subscription box. I know that most subscription boxes do the new releases because it’s less likely people will have them, but I’m thinking a lot of people go crazy over new releases and get the ARCs of them. I’d like to see a box where it’s just a totally random book. Yeah, we might have it, but I think it would be less likely cause there would be so many more to choose from rather than it being selective to a certain month.

Hopefully my rambling makes some type of sense 😛

I’m glad I’m back too. It’s so nice to be blogging again – had no idea how much I missed it until I started typing up this post. Yes, you make a good point! Especially for us bloggers who do get quite a number of ARCs of highly anticipated reads. I think there are boxes who do totally random books, so I might go and check those out!

  8. Oh man. I wish I lived in Australia. That is such an awesome box! I haven’t found one that is cheap shipping in Canada so I’ll just stick with LootCrate and not get a book box.

You got awesome stuff in this one and I’m really excited to see what other neat things you get in the months to come!

      • Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, zynga chip which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
